A Mother’s Promise, A Daughter’s Triumph

July 1, 2023, is a date that holds a deeply sacred significance in my life. It marks one of my greatest victories and perhaps the proudest milestone a single parent can ever experience: the college graduation of my daughter, Dorothy. For me, it was a crowning achievement, but it was foremost a shared triumph. Cognizant of our predicaments, my daughter persevered and successfully completed her education despite a mountain of challenges.

Her journey of independence began early. At the tender age of twelve, while still coping with the profound loss of her father, she left home to attend the Philippine Science High School–Western Visayas Campus. Despite the heartbreak of separation at such a young age, she excelled, graduating With High Honors and receiving special recognition as Best in Social Science.

Moving on to the Ateneo de Manila University brought an entirely new set of trials. Spending those four years apart was not easy for either of us, but it taught us the true meaning of resilience, sacrifice, and perseverance. Dorothy balanced the intense demands of the Honors Program in Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences (Communication Track) while pursuing a minor in Development and the Law.

Moreover, she carried the immense pressure of maintaining two highly competitive scholarships simultaneously: one from the Ateneo and another from the DOST. Balancing the requirements of both was no easy feat. I often told her that simply graduating under the weight of such responsibilities would already be an extraordinary accomplishment; graduating with honors from one of the country's premier universities seemed almost too much to ask.

Yet, she pressed on through financial constraints, separation anxiety, the sudden shift to online learning, and the grueling demands of academic and extracurricular life. The ultimate test came during her Final Examinations week when she fell ill with COVID-19. Through it all, her hard work and determination never wavered.

As a mother, the best I could offer was my unwavering support, a steady stream of encouragement, and strength when she felt weak. Above all, it was our unshakeable faith in God that carried us through every pocket of uncertainty. We held fast to scripture: "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans." (Proverbs 16:3)

When graduation day finally arrived, she didn't just graduate—she triumphed. Dorothy graduated Cum Laude (falling just a razor-thin .03 short of Magna Cum Laude) and was honored as the Program Awardee of her entire degree program. I must admit, I cried a lot that day. But they were tears of pure joy, boundless pride, and overwhelming gratitude.

Looking back, I see clearly that strength is forged in the fires of life's difficulties. Every hurdle became an opportunity to grow and to trust more deeply in God's divine providence. July 1, 2023, did not just close a chapter; it also marked the beautiful beginning of Dorothy’s professional career as she joined the UP Marine Science Institute. This date will forever remind me that hard work, faith, and perseverance will always bear fruit.

When Facebook was first created by Mark Zuckerberg in early 2005, it was much different than the marketed one we know today.  It was only known by a few workers who bragged about it, and even less used it.  Now, statistics show that 85 per cent of the world’s population have a Facebook account, making Zuckerberg one of the richest and youngest billionaires in the world.  The hype has spread to the younger generation of the 21 st century.  But the question is: should we let them? To Grin at Hello and Smile at Good-Bye The hotel was positively majestic yet not that overbearing to look at.  With the sun marvelously glowing gold; the sea arrogantly showing off its waves at how big and gigantic they are; the sky not wanting to be outdone by being as blue as possibly can be; the Bacolod Pavilion Hotel beautifully matched the backdrop.
