An Independence Day Reflection

Every Independence Day, I find myself asking: Where does freedom truly lie in the midst of our daily realities?

Where is freedom when a person has to settle for underemployment just to bring food to a hungry family? Where is freedom when one must surrender personal dignity for a few pesos to survive? Where is freedom when someone is forced to endure degrading circumstances simply to send children to school and secure their future? Where is freedom when one has to swallow pride and compromise self-worth merely to obtain a job? Where is freedom when countless individuals spend hours lining up to avail themselves of free goods because their meager income can no longer sustain their basic needs? And where is freedom when people gradually become accustomed to the persistent news of corruption, injustice, and the seeming indifference of those entrusted to serve the nation?

I am but an ordinary Filipino whose voice is often drowned out by the louder cries against injustice, neglect, inequality, and unfulfilled hopes. Like many others, I have witnessed both the promises and the shortcomings of our country's hard-earned independence. The longing for a better life, for genuine opportunities, and for a society where dignity is upheld remains deeply embedded in the Filipino spirit.

Yet amidst these realities, I continue to stand proud as a Filipino. For sixty-six years, this land has been my home. I have seen our people rise after calamities, endure hardships with quiet strength, and extend compassion even in times of scarcity. Filipinos are intelligent and resourceful, resilient in adversity, persevering in struggle, and steadfast in faith. These qualities have sustained us through generations of trials and continue to shape our national identity.

Independence, therefore, is not merely a historical event commemorated every June 12. It is an ongoing responsibility. Freedom is not simply the absence of foreign rule; it is the presence of justice, dignity, opportunity, and accountability. It calls each citizen to remain vigilant and each leader to govern with integrity and genuine concern for the common good. Nothing is permanent—not suffering, not despair, nor the challenges that confront us today. I believe that we, as a people, can and will rise above them. The struggle to preserve and deepen our freedom is a continuing one. Perhaps that is the price of living in a society that calls itself free: the constant task of safeguarding our values, defending what is right, and working together to build a nation where every Filipino can truly experience the blessings of independence.

As we celebrate another Independence Day, may we not only remember the heroism of those who fought for our liberty, but also recommit ourselves to the unfinished work of making freedom meaningful in the lives of all Filipinos. For genuine independence is fulfilled not only in our history, but in our shared hope and collective effort to create a more just, compassionate, and humane society.

Every time we celebrate our nation's independence, may we continue to ask difficult questions—not to diminish our love for the Philippines, but to deepen it. May we honor the sacrifices of our heroes by becoming responsible citizens, compassionate neighbors, and vigilant guardians of truth and justice. And as the prophet Micah reminds us: "What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8).

May we never lose faith in the Filipino spirit, for throughout history, we have proven time and again that even in the face of adversity, we rise.

"Let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up."Galatians 6:9

May God bless our beloved Philippines, grant wisdom to her leaders, courage to her citizens, and hope to those who struggle each day.

Mabuhay ang Sambayanang Pilipino. Mabuhay ang kalayaan. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas.
