Service for All Seasons, Service for No Reason
In the
prime of their life, they had been active servant-leaders. Their journey in the mission was
momentarily intruded by the virus. The Covid pandemic forced them to stay in the
confines of their homes, but definitely their commitment to serve still
remained strong. From an invitation from their parish priests to attend the
Orientation on the Synod
on Synodality, they ended their
hibernation.
In the
recently concluded Orientation for Parish Coordinators for the Synod on Synodality, I was awed at the presence of a number of
senior servant-leaders. Coming from
different parishes and mission stations in the Archdiocese of Capiz in the
Eastern Vicariates, it was an inspiration to see them go out of their homes and
brave the threat of Covid and turn a blind eye at the gloomy skies just to participate in the Orientation. The
smiles on their faces, their active participation and the energy were
invigorating. Cognizant that “cultura
digital” will come at play, they seemed less troubled. Their sense of service
overpowers their inadequacy in ITs for they know that their younger counterparts can do that for
their team. In other words, there is no
taint of hesitation but only motivation and the desire to do something for the mission. For the younger
participants, this is truly an inspiration.
On the
other hand, the older participants were also amazed at the vivacity of the
younger servant-leaders that despite their youth and their limited resources,
they’ve managed to serve the church. One
participant describes it as “selfless service”.
I can feel the excitement among the participants for they knew, the undertaking is faced with the lurking Covid virus, but then again, driven by the nobility of the mission, they have to put their best foot forward and put aside negativities. Perhaps the domineering feeling is that being a part of the synod on synodality could be one’s greatest contribution as a member of the living body of the church. The power of the Holy spirit that binds the dynamism of communion and participation in the propagation of the mission is the essence of synodality which Pope Francis envisions to achieve. It is the synergy that is needed in all areas of the mission.
To this
end, serving the church for all seasons requires no other reason.
