TWO MOTHERS
. . . Two Mothers . . .
for nine
months she bore me,
taking all
the nourishment and precautions to make me live;
I could hear
her silent pains but she responded with smiles.
when I came
out of this world she almost lost her life
because the
long hours of labor pains weakened her
and
complication in the medication worsened her situation.
but her love
and perseverance gave her
the extra
strength to hang on.
in the
absence of a father working far from home,
she raised me
and three other siblings.
nights were
made days to earn an honest extra living.
we maybe
deprived of a comfortable home and other amenities in life
but we had a
home that is accommodating and filled with love,
care and
understanding needed to make us whole.
we had been
properly educated not from exclusive schools
but we
treasured the wisdom a public school life can offer .
the four of
us can proudly say that we were raised in a modest home
and we’re
never deprived of the decency and the joys of youth.
at the time
that I settled for a family of my own,
Mama . . . Two Mothers . . .
for nine months she bore me,
taking all the nourishment and precautions to make me live;
I could hear her silent pains but she responded with smiles.

the four of us can proudly say that we were raised in a modest home
and we’re never deprived of the decency and the joys of youth.
at the time that I settled for a family of my own,
Mama Nena is always there looking over my life but never intruding.
she may not have left me treasures of gold and silver
but she gave me life itself.
from her I learned that life is sweeter
when you work to make it better . . .
. . . that we must dream and inch our way for the
realization of that dream;
. . . that happiness is not at all measured in terms of money
but in the satisfaction that you gain within;
. . . that there is honor in labor,
for the fruits of labor are self-gratifying;
. . . that there is enough room for one who wants to make a
life of her own;
. . . that patience, perseverance, fortitude and nobility
of work dignify man;
. . . that respect is gained if you yourself respect and love
yourself;
. . . that no matter how difficult life is, God will always
provide for facility in things that you do;
. . . that poverty is never a hindrance but a lever that can
move you up the ladder of success; and
. . . that life itself is the best teacher.
I may not be overt in expressing my love for MAMA NENA but these words mean more than what actions can do.
A new episode in life, gave me another Mama.
She became a friend, a sister, a mother, more than a mother-in-law.
She defied the image of a mother-in-law who poses as a thorn in one’s married life.
She may not be a Goliath but her qualities would surely dwarfen a giant –
She has eyes that watch but never intrude;
ears that listen;
mouth that opens with words that soften a troubled heart;
a shoulder to lean on;
a heart that feels one’s aches and joys;
an inspiration to follow on;
a courage to defend and stand for her kids;
a wisdom that makes one endure;
a strength to face the hardships that life may bring;
a deep and sincere love for family; and
an unwavering faith in God.
That’s my second mother – MAMA GLO!
She may have left this world but her legacy lives on in my heart.
Should I be given a chance to live again – I would love to have my two mothers once more. They are riches that no money can buy. No amount of worldly treasures could replace them nor measure their worth.
